t works hard on assignments
t works insane hours
couple days before assignment is due
assignment due date magically gets extended

(I wouldn’t say it’s all that surprising, seems like every prof is a bit behind on their lectures.)

busy busy weeks

working hard these days…everything is due on the 5th.
lots of work, not enough time.
I was trying to work in the lab today but some idiot decided to set the air conditioning to full blast, it was too cold and I just had to get out of there. Today was a pretty bad day. As usual, I got up only an hour before class and had to rush me way there. I got to school on time only to find out that the class was canceled, so onward to wait for the next class. Waited and waited, about 20 mins, so I decided to check the school cs site again. Turns out the other class canceled too, the prof ringged in 15 mins before the class to tell the school it’s canceled.  Damn man….I could have just stayed home and work on my assignments the whole day.

Anyway…something funny happen to me 2 nights ago. (funny depending on how you look at it) I worked so hard, I passed out on the floor between the tv and the bookcase, just there lying on the floor at home. I knew it was gonna happen as I keep pushing myself further, just didn’t expect it so soon. I really should be able to go 3 days + without sleep. ….guess I just need more coffee.

ffff….network is finally operating normally…sort of

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

my home network is now a lot better. Previously I was only able to connect at 10mbps, and connection drops off whenever there’s heavy traffic (about half an hour or so).
This has been happening for a week or two now. I’ve done everything to monitor the software side of thing and nothing turned up. Finally I decided to open up the box and there is it. The problem with the router is that it’s over heating. I blame you radioshack or whatever your name is now and you sucky power adapater. When I have an appliance with 9v 800amp specs, and your power adapter supports it, I expect it to work!

So now I’m stuck with the task of shopping for a new router. I’ve actually been keeping my eye on the prices ever since the network started acting up months ago. Now I’m left with the options:
1. a router support super G (108mbps wireless) 1000T(wired) and n specs(wireless)
2. a router with just super G
3. a router that match my current router’s specs

my choice
1. way too expensive, there isn’t a single one I can get for $100 bucks
2. these range from $60-$100 bucks, the technology has been around for over a year, this price range is unacceptable
3. $30 will take care of it, but who the f would pay for something old in the clearence section other than the desperate.

So I’m picking 4. Cool the router with a giant external fan till I have time to deal with this.

Here’s a list of stuff I’m planning to get after this sem’s over:

-wireless router  :p
-the pci card with dual dvi out and ati chipset (for some tri screen happiness)
-a 500gb hd, possibly with a firewire external box (yes, I prefer firewire over usb, hopefully the drives by then will drop to around $130.)
-a Mac, be it the mini or Macbook(which ever will be able to run both leopard and vista)

…i guess that’s it. I do very much want to get a 37" LCD tv with 1080p support to be used as a 4th monitor on the wall, but I don’t suppose I will plan my butt in front of the computer much when things are over,…so that’s not going to happen, at least not in TO.  I also have trouble deciding if I do get, should it be on the wall, because it seem more suitable to be placed where the old heater(CRT tv) is, yet if I do, I won’t be able to watch tv/dvd and stuff while I comfortably do my freelence stuff at my desk.

busy as always

I know it’s only been a few days since my last entry, but it felt like weeks. The last couple of day has been somewhat uneventful, just assignment after assignment. One good thing happened this week. The new (somewhat) fridge is finally here, so today I did some real grocery shopping. The past 2 weeks, I’ve been having lazy(gross) pasta (half can of chunky soup + pasta). I know it’s just about the worst thing, but with my busy schedule and no fridge, it was the only thing to be had. This week’s grocery bill is much higher than usual as some stuff that last for weeks were stocked.

Congrats to my friend V who got his P.Eng licence. Ha ha, another friend who I can cound on to sign my passport app form, j/k.

Sat was rather busy, from the time I woke up till 5am the next day, I was working on debugging  the prj project along with other members to make sure everything is ready for this week’s dry run. So why on Sat? The prof (the one I don’t like) offered to take time to test our system (on one of the busiest weekends where almost everyone has other tasks of greater priority). My other assignments are somewhat floating around, some started, some in research stage. I sure hope I can finish them all in time.

On my spare time, I’ve started watching an old anime series. Keror Gunso. Earth invading alien frogs,….it’s so funny. Yea I know, it’s from 2004 but 04 was when all this cs hell began.

I very much wonder how my career as a software developer will turn out. I know I will do great but I just don’t want to turn into something like my sis. She’s a good programmer but like some people I know, they settled down one on thing and forgot everything else. Some people stare at you with a blank face if you ask them to built an app with a gui out of the blue. I can’t ever imagine myself being that. I just have this need, to be able to do any and everything I’ve learned in the past, even if I haven’t touched it for years. A good measure to make sure every skill I’ve collected are still with me.

選擇

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

A decisoin is made only when you know all the other choices can be completed with your ability.

You tend to find yourself lucky - both in business and in life.
And while being wealthy is nice, you enjoy sharing your abundance with others.
You put your luck to good use: you are very ambitious and goal oriented. Often times, you get over excited and take on more than you can manage.
Your strength: Your ability to make your own luck
Your weakness: Thinking you can do it all
Your power color: Bronze
Your power symbol: Half Moon
Your power month: August

tired

Monday, March 12th, 2007

the day is finally over. I was physically in class today but my mind just wasn’t there. I think I spaced out much of the first class. It was the enterprise java bean class. The class went on and on but not a single line of codes, my eyes just glazed and then my mind followed. ha ha.

I went to Kiva’s for lunch today . Had a cheddar omelette and a latte. The waitress accidentally spill the coffee grind into her apron’s change pocket. She went all apologetic about it, though I hardly see any point to it. A min late for a latte really doesn’t make a difference to me. The incident, I think, created more of an inconvenience for her, having to wash the coffee grind from the money. At that point, my mind totally went blank as to what I could have said. Wasn’t my fault nor hers, it’s just an accident. Feeling that in some very distant way I caused this to happen, I tipped her more than what I usually do. Oh the omelette + latte came with a bagel, the whole meal was rather filling, enough to have skipped dinner tonight. Anyway, the food is great as usual. I might try havarti instead of cheddar next time. I prefer cheese with a stronger flavour.

last friday

after an exhausting vb test, I wanted to get some good food. I wanted 豬排菜飯 and 炒鱔糊 from 上海一家.  Drove half an hour to get there only to find that it’s not there anymore…..how disappointing. I don’t think I’ve came across anyother place in TO that makes 豬排菜飯. (I know it’s a very simple dish but it’s tasty and I like it, and that’s all what matters.)

Anyway, the test was difficult, I doubt anyone actually finished it. Basically we were asked to write a time driven application(game) where a tank moves and shots targets. It’s not technically difficult but just the amount of work that goes into it. I wrote the damn thing later that day and it took 4 hours, how the hell was I suppose to finish it in 1hr45mins?  If vb was all I’m taking, and I’ve been writing games for the past month,…sure then I’d probably can do it. I’m not mad at the prof. He’s a nice guy, but he just sort of slapped the test together without making sure it can be done within the time limit.

About the DB assignment, turns out the prof made a mistake, so I got perfect on the assignment and the test. I knew I couldn’t have made a mistake. Done that assignment 10 times, checked it 5 times before submitting.

What about today….just finished working on an assignment. Yea another night without sleep, it’s becoming a bad habbit. But I got a lot done. Most annoying part was having to commit the codes. Why would people change the code when they know I’m doing a critical implementation to the whole site? Took me a freaking hour to sync codes to the server.

beh, let’s just have a big lunch today at Kiva’s and forget about it. I feel like having a cheese omelette today. And a cup of coffee so I won’t fall asleep in the DB class.

everything is back to where it should be

yes yes yes, the Smashing Pumpkins are on tour again! As well, I’d just got 4 demo tracks to their upcoming album to be released July. The voice sounds different but it’s definitely pumpkins.  : )

Besides my fav tv show coming back, my fav band/music making a come back, my recent good mood might possibly come from chocolates.  With tones of work on my desk, I often feel like munching on something while I work. I pretty much have nothing to munch on other than chocolates. A bag of really delicious dark chocolate on biscuits, a box of "pot of gold", and a pack of milk chocolate. The biscuits I bought from the supermarket. The pot of gold is from a christmas party gift trade(not exactly something I like but a small rip in the packaging prevents me from re-gifting it). And the milk chocolate is from Ms. Mars. Man….at this rate, I’d be surprise if I don’t turn into the marshmallow man by the end of april.
